Cosas de andar de viajes y demás: me dejé de colocar por aquí la columna del lunes en Diario de Noticias, MILENIO.
Hace veinticinco siglos Esopo compuso una fábula en la que un pastor juega con la gente anunciando falsamente el ataque del lobo. Dos mil quinientos años en los que la moraleja sobre el valor de la sinceridad ha intentado imprimirse en el código de conducta de cada generación, que se entendiera que gritar “que viene el lobo” a cada momento es lo peor. Y todos hemos culpabilizado al pastor mentiroso por jugar irresponsablemente con algo que es fundamental: alertar innecesariamente y desprestigiar por lo tanto el sistema social de alerta y ayuda, consiguiendo que la gente se haga descreída y al final el lobo haga de las suyas. En el último siglo, sin embargo, hemos entendido que hay un cooperador necesario: el pueblo que atiende al aviso, por más que el pastor fuera ya conocido mentiroso, exagerado o interesado (las fábulas, y ese es también parte de su encanto se pueden extender y aplicar a variadas situaciones y protagonistas). Quizá porque en este caso el miedo al lobo es muy antiguo. De poco sirvió que nos los humanizaran, que viéramos de la mano de Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente que el lobo no era un animal tan terrible, para nada el enemigo del pastor y desde luego sí la víctima del ser humano. Es decir, tenemos prejuicios y ellos nos facilitan atender a quien alerta con exageración o falsedad. O crearnos enemigos de los cuales luego los pastores mentirosos nos alertarán. Ahí está en el fondo lo que nos explica por qué tantas veces el pastor mentiroso nos cuela su engaño: queremos que lo haga, nos gusta tener un enemigo a quien llegado el final del cuento podremos apalear o destripar en justo castigo. El pastor era un tipo poco defendible, vago y mentiroso y que se aprovechó de la situación, aunque tampoco sufrió más que sus paisanos. Y es que alertar del ataque del lobo siempre funciona.
Notas:
La fábula del esclavo cuentista Esopo "El pastor mentiroso" (que no tiene nada que ver, aunque a menudo se confunda en este país, con "Pedro y el lobo") hace la número 210 del índice Perry de la Aesopica. Dado que Esopo es casi un personaje mítico, tampoco le damos mucha importancia al tema. Sobre la fábula, la entrada de la wikipedia en inglés es notable y recomendable: The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
