El cine que veíamos de críos nos marcóṕ profundamente: tantos años de ver Qué bello es vivir o Ben Hur... O esas historias de amores imposibles, melodramas con grandes e inolvidables parejas del cine. Somos lo que ese cine nos fue marcando, hasta con Marcelino pan y vino, claro. Ahora es más difícil que algo así pase, con tanta banalidad y tanta oferta en el panorama. Y tengo para mí que en cierto modo el que fuera todo en blanco y negro nos permitió sumergirnos más en esa tele como si fuera un libro de texto, algo de historia. Lo digo porque estos días, hablando de las mujeres en la ciencia y teniendo pendiente seguir con esta serie de columnas con las que iré celebrando el sesquicentenario de la tabla periódica, me he acordado de una película de esas de niñez: en ella Maria Sklodowska y Pierre Curie se pasan un gélido invierno en un cobertizo parisino removiendo hectolitros de barro de pechblenda para extraer un nuevo material que era mucho más radiactivo que el uranio. En la película de Mervyn LeRoy, con las caras de Greer Garson y Walter Pidgeon, una de esas parejas que ahora solo recuerdan unos pocos mitómanos. Aún hoy siempre que pienso en Marie Curie la imagino con ese vestido negro y su pelo rizado, cejas perfiladas y ojos de belleza fraangélica. La tuve que haber visto varias veces, nada raro porque la programación televisiva era repetitiva como esa dictadura sabía serlo. Esa heroína de una ciencia a la que aún no sabía que me dedicaría se quedó dentro de mí y sigo visualizándola al pensar en esa gran parte de la tabla periódica que comenzó a ser descubierta a finales del siglo XIX. La pasión por la ciencia con el motor de la curiosidad, pero también cómo se sobrevive sin ser comprendido y sin fondos, son historias de la ciencia muy actuales, heroicas como lo fueron aquellas historias que hoy recuerdo.
